Ward I: Wanda Vaughn
Wanda Vaughn, a longtime Ward I resident, was appointed earlier this spring to fill the Council vacancy left by the departure of Councilmember Trent Boultinghouse. Wanda brings decades of dedication to public service, education, and community involvement. A Mission resident since 1989, Wanda has raised her children here and now proudly cheers on her grandchildren as they attend local schools.
Her professional background is both impressive and diverse. Wanda has taught at several institutions, including KU, William Jewell College, Rockhurst University, and Graceland University. She has also worked for the University of Colorado, Trinity Lutheran Hospital, and Children’s Mercy Hospital, and retired from the Shawnee Mission School District after 18 years as a school nurse. In addition to her civilian career, Wanda served 31 years in the U.S. Army Reserve, including a deployment to Afghanistan.
Wanda continues to volunteer at Rushton Elementary School and with the Shawnee Mission School District, her church, sorority, the Johnson County Health Department, and Mainstreet Credit Union. She currently works part-time at UMKC, continuing her lifelong commitment to education and service.
