Household Battery Recycling

The Mission Sustainability Commission’s household battery recycling program has received great community response, collecting more than 730 pounds of batteries to be recycled since launching in 2016.
Battery Recycling
The program allows Mission residents to recycle many different types of common household batteries.

Accepted batteries and items include:

- Alkaline Batteries (e.g. AA, AAA, C, D, 9V)
- Nickel Cadmium Batteries (NiCd)
- Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries (NiMH)
- Lithium Ion Cells (less than 60 Wh rated capacity)
- Lithium Ion Batteries (less than 300 Wh rated capacity)
- Lithium Metal cells (less than 5g of lithium content)
- Lithium Metal batteries (less than 25g of lithium content)
- Lead Acid (Non-Spillable)
- Silver Oxide
- Carbon Zinc
- Portable Electronics

While the single-use battery recycling program primarily focuses on lithium batteries, it also diverts the materials in alkaline batteries from landfills as well. Please keep in mind that hearing aid batteries are lithium and are accepted through the program. Lithium batteries should be prepared with clear tape over the terminals or individually bagged. Bags are provided at the drop-off location.

Those who are interested in recycling batteries can look for the green boxes at City Hall, 6090 Woodson St., or at the Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center at 6200 Martway St.

The program will be monitored over time and may be suspended due to budget concerns or other factors, but notice will be posted to this webpage.

Residents interested in recycling other items beyond what is collected in curbside bins can check recyclespot.org for additional information.
