City of Mission Waste & Recycling Collection

Some important things to note about trash service in Mission:

    • Each household should have two 65 gallon Polykarts--one for trash and one for recyclables. Your trash cart has a black lid, and your recycling cart has a yellow lid (along with a decal showing recyclable materials).  These are large green containers with wheels that may be stored in a garage or behind the front building line of your home, and wheeled to the curb on your collection day. The carts are made from 15% recycled plastic to reduce waste!
    • If you recently moved to Mission and you're missing one of your carts, please contact City Hall at 913-676-8350 and ask for a replacement.  We will then contact Deffenbaugh and you should receive new carts from them on your next collection day.
    • Trash is limited to what fits in the carts, and residents must purchase specially designated Deffenbaugh bags for $1.50 for any excess. These bags may be purchased at City Hall, the Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center, or from Deffenbaugh directly.
    • Recycling is unlimited. Once you have filled your recycling cart, you may place excess in another container labeled with the word “recycling” or the universal recycling symbol.
    • Bulky item collection will not be changed. Deffenbaugh will continue to collect large items on the first collection day of the month.
    • Place your yard waste in biodegradable paper bags (available at any local hardware store), in a 32 gallon bin, or in a bundle no more than 4 feet long and 18 inches in diameter. Items cannot weigh more than 60 pounds.
    • During October, November, and December the yard waste bag limit increases to 12 items per week (any combination of bags, bins, or bundles). For the other 9 months, the limit will be 6 items a week.
    • Permits are required for dumpsters if you do not have an active building permit. Dumpster permits may be obtained through Neighborhood Services at City Hall or by call (913) 676-8390. There is no charge for the permit; however, a dumpster may only remain on the property for 15 days, one time per year.

Contact us if you have any questions or concerns about trash and recycling at 913-676-8350.
