1. Are licenses required for my animals? How do I register them?

As of January 1, 2011,cats and dogs no longer need to be licensed with the city. A current certificate of rabies vaccination is still required by city ordinance. Animals are limited to two dogs and two cats per house.

You are encouraged to enter all your pets into our voluntary Pet Registry. This will assist Animal Control in locating owners of lost pets. City of Mission Pet Registry

3. What do you offer?

The City of Mission Parks & Recreation Department is a municipal recreation service offering fitness, classes, programs, and special events. The department operates an 80,000 square foot Community Center with a weight room, cardio room, Aquatics, indoor track, gymnasium, conference and meeting facilities, and much more. The department also operates a 500,000 gallon seasonal pool facility known as the Mission Municipal Pool. The pool facility has separate wading, diving and lap lane pools.

4. How do I register for programs?

Registration is available on-line by following the links in the programs/special events section on this web-site, by phone at 913-722-8200 or in person.

5. How can I use the department's facilities?

The facilities are available by membership or daily pass, and are open to all Metro Kansas City residents or business employees.

City Hall offices are open Monday thru Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
and will be closed on the following Holidays.(Please note that City Hall is also open some evenings for meetings and court sessions at specified times.)

2. When are City Council Meetings?

The City Council Legislative Meeting is the third Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. The City Council also meets every other Wednesday of the month - Community Development Committee meets the first Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.; Finance and Administration Committee meets the second Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.; the City Council Work Session is the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

Meetings are held at City Hall and all are open to the public.

3. What is a City Council Work Session?

City Council Work Sessions are held monthly to allow Council an opportunity to discuss various issues in depth. No action is taken during a Council Work Session. In Mission, Work Sessions are traditionally held on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. and are open to the public.

4. How long is a City Councilmember's term?

Councilmembers are elected to four-year terms. Elections are staggered so that each ward elects a councilmember every two years.

5. What is the difference between a regular City Council Meeting and a Special City Council Meeting?

Regular City Council Meetings are established by ordinance. In Mission, the City Council's Legislative Meeting is held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. It is during this meeting that formal action is taken by the Governing Body.

Special City Council Meetings may be called by the Mayor on the written request of any three members of the council. The specific issue(s) to be discussed must be specified in the meeting call, and no other agenda items may be discussed or acted upon at a Special City Council Meeting. A Special City Council Meeting is usually only called when the issue on the agenda can not wait until the regularly scheduled City Council Legislative Meeting.

6. How are City Council Committees arranged?

The Mayor appoints one councilmember from each ward to serve on either the Finance and Administration Committee or the Community Development Committee. The Mayor also appoints the chair and vice-chair of each committee. These appointments are for two years and are made on or before the first City Council Meeting in June.

7. How do I register to vote?

You can either stop by City Hall and pick up an application or print the Voter Registration form and mail it to the Johnson County Election office.

Licensing and Permits

1. Do I need a license to open a new business?

Yes. All businesses in Mission are required to have a license. Contact the Deputy City Clerk at 913-676-8354 for specific information. More...

2. How do I get a building or electrical permit?

Property owners and/or contractors will need to submit an application to the Public Works Department at Mission City Hall, 6090 Woodson Rd. Contractors must be licensed with the Johnson County Contractor Licensing Board prior to submitting an application for the city permit.

3. Do I need a permit to replace my existing roof?

Yes. Also, if a dumpster is needed contact Neighborhood Services, 913-676-8350 to obtain a permit.

4. Do I need a building permit to erect a fence?

Yes. Fence permit applications are required for any new fence, an extension of an existing fence or when more than fifty percent (50%) of an existing fence is being replaced. There is no fee for this permit. See sections 415.030 & 445.100 in municipal code

5. Do I need a permit to have a garage sale?

Yes. Permits are required to conduct garage sales within the city limits. No more than two sales shall be conducted at the same location within a twelve-month period, and no garage sale may last longer than five consecutive days. There is no fee for a garage sale permit. You may obtain a permit by coming by Mission City Hall at 6090 Woodson Rd.

6. Can I post signs advertising my garage sale?

Yes, as long as you follow the guidelines in the city ordinance.

Municipal Court

1. How may I pay for my ticket?

Payments can be made in person any time during business hours at the Court window, after hours at the drop box located outside the Municipal Court, through the mail, or online for a minimal fee. The Municipal Court accepts cash, personal checks, money orders, cashier checks, and major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, and Discover)..

2. How do I get a continuance for a traffic ticket?

You must call the Municipal Court (913-676-8325) at least one day before your given court date.

The Court Clerk is allowed to give you one continuance by telephone.

If another continuance is needed or it is on the court date, you must go before the Judge to request it.

3. How do I get a ticket amended?

You must go to court and see the Prosecutor.

Payment will be due that evening. It is normally double the fine plus court costs. Cash, checks, MasterCard, Visa and Discover will be accepted.

5. What if I have an equipment violation?

If you have been issued a summons for certain equipment violations, you are eligible to pay half of the original fine if you correct the problem and bring the vehicle to the Municipal Court before your scheduled court date. Your equipment violation must fall within one of the three categories: (1) broken or defective lighting equipment, (2) expired license tags, or (3) broken mirrors or broken winshields. A Police Officer will certify that the violation has been corrected and upon approval you will be eligible to pay half of your original fine, which must be paid at the time of vehicle inspection.

6. What if I was cited for driving without insurance?

If you had valid insurance for the vehicle you were driving on the date cited and simply didn't have proof at the time of the stop, you can bring such proof to the Court any time before your court date and have the violation dismissed. The insurance coverage will be verified with the State. If you did not have insurance coverage at the time of your citation, you need to obtain coverage for your vehicle and provide proof to the Court at the time of your scheduled Court hearing.

1. How do I get my fingerprints taken?

We provide fingerprinting services on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, between the hours of 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The cost of the service is $10.00 for Mission residents and $25.00 for non-residents. We can accept cash or check only.

2. How do I get a copy of a police report?

Officers are given three working days to complete a report. The Police Department Office is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The cost of a report is $5.00 and we can accept cash or check only.

2. How do I sign up for trash removal?

The City has a contract with Deffenbaugh Disposal for weekly curbside pick up of trash, recycling, and yard waste from single-family residences. You will not receive a bill, but a portion of your annual tax bill is dedicated to paying for this service under our Solid Waste Utility fee. Please remember that three separate trucks will visit your residence on trash days: one for recycling, another for trash, and a third for any yard waste you put out.

4. Will the city be picking up my leaves?

No, the city’s street sweeper is not designed to pick up large piles of leaves. Burning leaves is not allowed in the city limits.

Deffenbaugh will pick up leaves with your regularly scheduled trash pick-up when properly bagged. You must purchase large paper yard waste bags (available at most area hardware and department stores) and use these to bag yard waste such as grass clippings and leaves. You may place up to 6 of these paper bags on the curb each week, however in October and November limit expands to 12 bags to accommodate falling leaves.

If you have yard waste in excess of the bag limit, you must buy a yard waste sticker for each extra bag to show Deffenbaugh that you've paid to have additional waste taken away. These stickers are $1.50 each and can be purchased during regular business hours at City Hall or the Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center.

5. Do I need a permit for a dumpster?

Yes, if you do not have an active building permit. Dumpster permits may be obtained thru Neighborhood Services at City Hall or by call (913) 676-8390. There is no charge for the permit however a dumpster may only remain on the property for 15 days, one time per year.
